Fashion:Scottish Fashion Awards 2011: all the red carpet gossip

Scotland was jam-packed full of designers, models and A-listers earlier this week as the sixth annual Scottish Fashion Awards kicked off at the Glasgow Science Centre

The country’s most glamorous red carpet event was hosted by MTV’s Laura Whitmore and stars in attendance included Dame Shirley Bassey, Scottish singer Lulu and the Prime Minister’s wife Samantha Cameron. Supermodel David Gandy, Scottish actress Louise Linton and ITV’s design guru John Amibile also turned up for the star-studded awards.

Celebrity expert Rosa Zambonini was also there to get all the gossip from the night’s events. TV personality Brix Smith Smart appeared on the red carpet and she told Rosa:

“There’s so many [designers] that I love. I’m wearing Christopher Kane, I love Louise Gray and I love Jonathon Saunders”

RiverCity actress Laura McMonagle was also in attendance at the event and said:

“We have so much talent in Scotland it’s unbelievable. I’ve got so many friends that are upcoming designers that need to be put out there.”

Lulu added: “Jonathon Saunders is fabulous. I’m hoping to learn more as I go in there tonight and each year it spreads and it gets bigger, so I think we just have to support that Glasgow style.”

The awards are a firm fixture on the international fashion calendar and official sponsors include Swarovski, Toni&Guy, M&S, The Herald and Times Group and Glasgow Airport.

This year’s top awards included Scottish Designer of the Year, Young Scottish Designer of the Year and Scottish Fashion Icon.

Jonathan Saunders was crowned Designer of the Year for the second year in a row after fighting off stiff competition from Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders, Holly Fulton, Louise Gray and E-Tautz.

The nominations for Scottish Young Designer of the Year were highly impressive and included two newcomers – the edgy fashion label Obscure Couture and Marc Ross, who has worked for Burberry, Anya Hindmarsh and Barbour and has his own collection. Other nominations in the category included Kerry Nixon, Iona Crawford and Alice Palmer, but it was award faithful Henrietta Ludgate who came up trumps and won the coveted prize.

The Fashion Icon award was scooped by Skins actress Freya Mavor, who beat off the likes of Karen Gillan, Laura McMonagle and Gerard Butler to take the style crown
